Его or свой? What is the difference?

What for do we need the word свой in Russian if there are already мой, твой, его, её, etc. What’s the difference between его and свой? I tried to answer these questions in today’s post.

его или свой

From simple…

If you choose between свой and мой, свой and твой, свой and наш, свой and ваш, you may say it the way you like more without being worried to be misunderstood:

Я хорошо делаю свою работу. = Я хорошо делаю мою работу.

Ты хорошо делаешь свою работу. = Ты хорошо делаешь твою работу.

Мы хорошо делаем свою работу. = Мы хорошо делаем нашу работу.

Вы хорошо делаете свою работу. = Вы хорошо делаете вашу работу.

To complex

But there is the risk to say something you didn’t mean when you choose between свой and его, свой and её, свой and их.

Example:

Антон хорошо делает его работу.

Whose work does he do well? Is it his own (Anton’s) work or the work of Ivan? Maybe he does Igor’s or even Andrew’s work well? Nobody knows.

Compare:

Антон хорошо делает свою работу.

It is obvious now. Anton does свою (his own, Anton’s) work well.

The pronoun свой shows us, that the speaker talks about Anton’s work. While if you say ‘Антон хорошо делает его работу,’ your companion will have to analyze the context. She may conclude, that Anton does Ivan’s work well (if you also talk about Ivan).

Here are some more examples, when you need to be careful choosing between свой and его, свой and её, свой and их:

Do you feel the difference between его and свой now? Can you come up with the similar examples?
